Pil and Galia Kollectiv
They Came From The Earth: A Screening of Science Fiction Films Concerning Vegetables
Friday 29 July

"The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution!"
Paul Cézanne

Bloodsucking evil created by radiation, soilent creatures sent here to terraform our planet, controlling all elements of the biological down to the cellular level. Come the vegetable rebellion, they will have their day. They came here and built their organic machines from giant vegetables. But what is the purpose of these machines?Although predominantly benign, these entities consisting of mainly carbohydrates finally get their retribution. The ultimate form of revolution arises from the earth, as subservient salad turns to violent vengeance. This program of short artist films, television excerpts and trailers presents a cornucopia of catastrophic calamities and inexplicable encounters between man and vegetable, curated by xero, kline & coma and featuring the work of Gelbart (with Felix Kubin), Pil and Galia Kollectiv, Charlie Tweed and others.

PAUL ETIENNE LINCOLN AT SLG

Soon to be a student again at Camberwell School of Art and Design, half of [Details] traveled South for nerve-racking but successful interview and visiting The South London Gallery for the first time:

Paul Etienne Lincoln- An Aurelian Labyrinth and Other Explications

New York-based British artist Paul Etienne Lincoln’s work is inspired by historical figures, memory and sensorial perception. Usually realised in elaborate, allegorical installations, it is often produced as the culmination of extensive periods of research, combining the culture, nature and society of specific places.

This solo exhibition introduces the artist’s idiosyncratic output through eight printed Explications, some of which have never been shown before, alongside models of large-scale projects and the film work The Velocity of Thought (2006).

At the heart of Lincoln’s exhibition is an intricate scale model and Explicationof a proposal he made in 2006 for a temporary work entitled An Aurelian Labyrinth for the SLG’s Fox Garden. Interweaving elements of local history and ecology with reference to Michael Faraday, baroque music and the Camberwell Beauty butterfly, Lincoln proposed a complex system of music, botany and a mechanical pansy cutter, triggered each day by a JS Bach score, its blades creating a labyrinth in a bed of genetically modified pansies.

Exhibition closes 18th September.

BATH SPA DEGREE SHOW

[Details] were invited to Bath Spa School of Art and Design to sit on a panel giving advice to graduating students on professional practice and working within the art world as a recent graduate. Also on the panel were:

Lucy Drane; Co-ordinator of Spike Island Associates
Sarah Walsh; Administrator of Whitechapel Gallery
Peter Salt; Development Manager of Art for Bath & North East Somerset
Pradeep Sharma; Head of School, Art and Design, Bath Spa University

Many thanks to Sarah Nicolson for inviting us.

We also had a chance to look around the Degree Show. Highlights for us were:

Photos documenting the process of a white substance thrown at a wall- Chloe Williams

The tranquil installation of 3 videos showing Layne Arlina's performance of washing her face over a bucket.
Wall sized sound/movement installation of elastic bands- Jenny Cooper

We were greatly impressed with Charlotte Bartrop's work: the use of materials and creation of space- both an aesthetically beautiful installation- and technically interesting. The work fitted into the industrial exhibition space- see the top photograph for the addition and play of the light and shadows on the work- adding a further dimension to the installation.
